Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek Μέμϕις , -an suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek Μέμϕις Memphis (ultimately < ancient Egyptian mn-nfr-(pjpj) , originally the name of the funerary complex and related royal residence of Pepy I, and later applied more widely to the city as a whole; compare Akkadian mempi ) + -an suffix, perhaps after Middle French memphien (1585 as adjective in the passage translated in quot. 1605 at sense B. 1). Compare earlier Memphite adj., Memphitic adj., Memphitical adj.
