Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French méningisme.
Etymology: < French méningisme (1894) < méninge meninx n. or méning- (in méningite meningitis n.) + -isme -ism suffix, after péritonisme peritonism n. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mĭni·ndʒiz'm) /mɪˈnɪndʒɪz(ə)m/.
Pathology.
The occurrence of symptoms resembling those of meningitis in the absence of inflammation of the meninges.
