Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 239) < Byzantine Greek ὀπισθόκομος wearing the hair long behind < ancient Greek ὀπισθο- opistho- comb. form + κόμη hair (see coma n.²), with allusion to the bird's occipital crest of feathers. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (opi·sþoko^um) /əʊˈpɪsθəʊkəʊm/.
