Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: proper name Menno , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < the name of Menno Simonszoon (1496–1561), Dutch priest and reformer, leader of an Anabaptist group + -ite suffix1, with -n- probably after Mennon-, Menno, post-classical Latin form of the name (1549 or earlier). Compare Dutch Mennoniet, Mennonit (1597 as noun, 1759 as adjective), French Mennonite (1673).

A member of a Protestant sect which emphasizes adult baptism and rejects Church organization, military service, and public office.The Mennonites originated as an Anabaptist group in Friesland c1530 under the leadership of Menno Simons (or Simonszoon; see etymology) and now live principally in the United States and Canada. Some Mennonites, known as Old Order Mennonites and living mainly in Pennsylvania and south-western Ontario, do not use modern technology (electricity, motor transport, etc.) and dress in black.
