Etymology: < scientific Latin Menorhyncha, former group name (F. Brauer 1885, in Sitzungsber. der Kaiserlichen Akad. der Wissensch. 91 298; irregularly < ancient Greek μένειν (see remain v.), which does not form compounds in μενο- in Greek (compare Menobranchus n., Menopoma n.) + ῥύγχος snout, proboscis (see -rhynchous comb. form)) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (menori·ŋkəs) /mɛnɒˈrɪŋkəs/.

Entomology. Obsolete.

Belonging to or characteristic of the Menorhyncha (in F. Brauer's classification of insects, those taking food by suction in the larval and adult stages).
