Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Mesomyodi , -an suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mesomyodi (A. H. Garrod 1876, in Proc. Zool. Soc. 518; < meso- meso- comb. form + -myodi (in Polymyodi : see polymyodian adj.)), former group name + -an suffix. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (me:soˌməiˌōu·diăn) /ˌmɛsəʊmaɪˈəʊdɪən/.
Ornithology.
Of a bird: having a syrinx whose muscles are attached to the middle of the bronchial semi-rings; spec. (in Garrod's scheme) belonging to the division Mesomyodi of passerine birds, closely corresponding to the suborder Deutero-Oscines (the suboscine passerines). Also: characteristic of such a bird. Cf. acromyodian adj.
