Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mercalli.
Etymology: < the name of Giuseppe Mercalli (1850–1914), Italian geologist, who devised the scale in 1897.

1. attributive. Designating or relating to an arbitrary 12-point scale used to express the intensity of an earthquake at a particular place, with I representing a virtually imperceptible disturbance and XII indicating total destruction; esp. in Mercalli scale.Contrasted with the Richter scale, which measures the intrinsic magnitude of an earthquake.The scale proposed by Mercalli was modified by A. Sieberg in 1923 ( Erdbebenkunde 102–4), and again by H. O. Wood and F. Newman in 1931 (see quot.), when the acceleration limits for the grades were omitted and the defining observational phenomena regrouped. This 1931 scale was named the modified Mercalli scale.
