Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French métaphysicien ; metaphysic n.1, -ian suffix.
Etymology: Either < Middle French, French métaphysicien (c1370 in Middle French as methaphisicien ), or independently < metaphysic n.1 + -ian suffix (compare -ician suffix), perhaps after physician n.
