Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a Greek lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: meta- prefix, physis n.; Greek ϕύσις.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + physis n. or its etymon ancient Greek ϕύσις, probably after ancient Greek μεταϕύεσθαι to become by change. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (metæ·fisis) /mɛˈtæfɪsɪs/.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: meta- prefix, diaphysis n., epiphysis n.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + -physis (in diaphysis n. or epiphysis n.). Compare French métaphyse (1956 or earlier).
Anatomy.
The (usually slightly flared or conical) part of a long bone located between the diaphysis and epiphysis; (also) the part of a vertebral body beneath an epiphysis (rare).
