Etymology: < meta- prefix + -podium comb. form, after post-classical Latin metapedium (17th cent. or earlier), with substitution of ancient Greek ποδ- , πούς (see -pod comb. form) for classical Latin ped- , pēs (see -ped comb. form).R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1857) gives a Latin form metapidium.
1. Anatomy and Zoology. Originally: the metatarsus. Later also: the metatarsus or metacarpus (cf. metapodial adj. and n.); (occasionally) a metapodial bone.
