Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: meta- prefix, psychology n.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + psychology n.In quots. 1913, 1914 and 1922 translating German Metapsychologie (apparently coined by S. Freud in a letter of 13 Mar. 1896, but not published until 1901 ( Zur Psychopathologie des Alltagslebens)); in subsequent use chiefly after Freud's use of the German term. Compare French métapsychologie (1914).
Chiefly Psychoanalysis.
The study of questions concerning the ultimate nature of the mind and its functions which lie beyond the scope of experimental psychology; (Psychoanalysis) speculative inquiry into the nature of the fundamental processes and states which underlie human psychology (e.g. in Freud's concepts of the ego, superego, and id); any particular theory concerning these phenomena.
