Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μετασχηματισμός.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μετασχηματισμός < ancient Greek μετα- meta- prefix + σχηματισμός configuration (see schematism n.). In sense 1 after German Metaschematismus (1845). Compare post-classical Latin metaschematismus rearrangement (1620 in a British source). R. Dunglison (see quot. 1848 at sense 1) records also a post-classical Latin form metaschematisis.
