Etymology: < classical Latin mercēdārius person who provides another with income < mercēd- , mercēs wage, fee (see mercy n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare mercenary n.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A person who receives payment for his or her services; a hireling. Also: the employer of such a person.The use in quot. 1656 may be interpreted as adjectival.
