Etymology: < German Mestom ( S. Schwendener Das mechanische Princip in Anat. Bau der Monocotylen (1874) p. v) < ancient Greek μέστωμα (taken in the sense ‘filling up’) < μεστοῦν to fill up ( < μεστός full, of unknown origin) + -ωμα -oma comb. form. Compare stereome n.

The conducting elements and associated parenchyma of a vascular bundle (as opposed to the strengthening mechanical elements). Now historical.

1898 H. C. Porter tr. E. Strasburger et al. Text-bk. Bot. 102 Other terms often used to designate the vascular bundles are folio-vascular bundles and mestome. The vascular portion is also termed the xylem or hadrome.

Kl. 22 405) < Mestom mestome n. + Scheide (see sheath n.1)] a sheath of relatively thick-walled cells, without chloroplasts, situated within the parenchymatous bundle sheath in certain grasses (in quot. 1925 used mistakenly for the parenchymatous sheath).
