Etymology: < Miass (formerly Miask : see miaskite n.), the name of a town on the river Miass in the Urals where the mineral was first obtained + -ite suffix¹ (see quot. 1814).The name was perhaps coined in German or Russian; however, quot. 1814 is generally accepted by mineralogy texts as the coinage of the name, and earlier publication of it by Wuttig himself has not been found.
