Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown; with the ending compare -ling suffix1. Compare wrig n.2 and rit n.3, which apparently show shortened forms of this word; compare also English regional (Northumberland) wrecknel , rinklin , (Yorkshire) greck , grek , all with the same meaning (and compare also quot. 1516).It has been suggested that the first element may reflect a borrowing from early Scandinavian (compare Norwegian regional rak skeleton, dead body, and other forms cited at rake n.1); see further W. B. Lockwood Informal Introd. Eng. Etymol. (1995) 169–70. Compare the following for probable evidence of slightly earlier currency of recknell:1516 J. Skayman Skayman's Bk. June in Farming & Gardening in Late Medieval Norfolk (Norfolk Rec. Soc.) (1997) 109 I was at Southcreik wessyng rekenelles there.
Chiefly English regional (northern) in later use.
A small or weak animal or (occasionally) plant; the smallest and weakest animal of a litter, the runt; (in extended use) the youngest or smallest child in a family. Also attributive in reckling child. Cf. wreckling n., wregling n., rit n.3
