Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin merīdiēs.
Etymology: < classical Latin merīdiēs noon (see meridian adj.). Compare meridie n.The Latin word is found earlier in English contexts; compare:OE Byrhtferð Enchiridion (Ashm.) (1995) ii. iii. 112 Se dæg hæfð þreo todælednyssa. Seo forme hatte mane (þæt ys ærnemerigen), and seo oðer ys gecweden meridies, and seo þridde ys geciged suppremum.a1398 J. Trevisa tr. Bartholomaeus Anglicus De Proprietatibus Rerum (BL Add.) f. 126v Mydday hatte meridies, as it were, þe myddel of þe day. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mĕri·diˌīz) /mᵻˈrɪdɪiːz/.
