Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: necto- comb. form, -phore comb. form.
Etymology: < necto- comb. form + -phore comb. form. Compare earlier nectocalyx n.
Zoology.
In some siphonophores: a zooid which has a swimming bell but lacks a manubrium (and usually tentacles and sense organs), and which contracts rhythmically to propel the colony through the water. Also called nectocalyx.
