Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: meta- prefix, -coele comb. form.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + -coele comb. form. Compare slightly earlier metacoelia n. Compare also mesocoel n.With senses 2 and 3 compare meta- prefix 3.
1. Zoology. In form metacoele. A secondarily formed coelom, esp. the reduced form present in leeches; a pseudocoel or schizocoel. Obsolete.

1888 G. Rolleston & W. H. Jackson Forms Animal Life (ed. 2) p. xxix It [sc. a second type of coelom] is a system of channels and spaces excavated in the mesoblast secondarily. To this type the name metacoele might be applied.
2. Anatomy and Zoology. In form metacoele. (The caudal part of) the fourth ventricle of the brain. Cf. metacoelia n. rare.
