Etymology: Blend of merit n. and heritage n., chosen in 1988 after an international competition held by American vintners to create a name to denote high-quality blended wines.The winning name was created by Neil Edgar of Newark, California.
Chiefly U.S.
Any of various wines of high quality produced exclusively in the United States from blends of Bordeaux grape varieties (see also quot. 1994).A proprietary name in the United States.

Wine 616/1 The name is available only to American wineries that agree to join an association and uphold the following requirements of the wine labelled Meritage: made exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot grapes for red wines and Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle for whites; produced in quantities of no more than 25,000 cases a year; one of the two most expensive wines produced by the winery.
