Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps related to post-classical Latin merlinus a hood worn by canons (1259, 1437).Du Cange interprets merlinus as a variant of mellinus or melinus , derived < melote melote n. N.E.D. (1906) enters quots. 15531, 15532 under merlion n.1, although recording uncertainty as to whether they should be regarded as showing the same word.
Obsolete.
Perhaps: a hood or other attachment for a clerical robe.

A mythical creature with the head and trunk of a lion and the tail of a fish, regarded as the protector of Singapore.The merlion is represented on a celebrated monument installed in Merlion Park, Singapore, on 15 September 1972.
