Compare Italian metopa (1436), French métope (1526–37 in Middle French as metoppe, 1545 as methope), Portuguese métopa (1548), Spanish métopa (1624).

A square area between two triglyphs in a Doric frieze. semi-metope n. the half-space between the corner and the triglyph nearest to the corner (also demi-metope).
