Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin metopa; Greek μετόπη.
Etymology: < classical Latin metopa (Vitruvius) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek μετόπη (Vitruvius) < ancient Greek μετά meta- prefix + ὀπή hole (Vitruvius gives the plural ὀπαί holes in a frieze to receive the beam-ends) < the same base as ὀπ- , ὄψ eye, face (see optic adj.). Compare Italian metopa (1436), French métope (1526–37 in Middle French as metoppe, 1545 as methope), Portuguese métopa (1548), Spanish métopa (1624).
Architecture.
A square area between two triglyphs in a Doric frieze. semi-metope n. the half-space between the corner and the triglyph nearest to the corner (also demi-metope).

Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μέτωπον.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μέτωπον forehead < μετά meta- prefix + ὠπ- , ὤψ eye, face (see -ops comb. form). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (me·toup) /ˈmɛtəʊp/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
T. H. Huxley's name for: the forepart of the head of a crab.
