Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish milpa.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish milpa (1568 in this sense; 1552–3 in plural form milpas in sense ‘property, estates’) < Nahuatl milpan < mil- (in milli cultivated field) + -pan (postposition) on the surface of, in, on.
In Central America and Mexico: a small cultivated field, usually of corn or maize.
