Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain.Various suggestions have been made for the first syllable, including teuch , Scots variant of tough adj., and Scots teuch , deuch drink, dram ( < Scottish Gaelic deoch : see jough n. and compare deoch an doris n.). The ending is perhaps influenced by Scottish Gaelic agent nouns with the suffix -adair (e.g. sgrìobhadair writer, scribe); the final -er is now often understood to be -er suffix1.
Scottish (frequently derogatory).
A. n.
A person from the Scottish Highlands or Hebrides, in early use esp. a Gaelic-speaker. In later use also more generally: an unsophisticated or uneducated person from a predominantly rural area; a country bumpkin.
