Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with Old Frisian midhrithere , midhrith , midhrede , Middle Low German midder < the Germanic base of mid adj. + a second element perhaps ultimately < one of a group of Indo-European bases with the presumed sense ‘to cut, to separate’ (compare riddle n.2, ancient Greek κρίνειν (see crisis n.), classical Latin cernĕre cern v.1). Compare midriff n., and also midgen n., with which the word has apparently been confused in sense and perhaps also in form. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mi·drėd) /ˈmɪdrɪd/.
Obsolete. In later use English regional (northern) and Scottish.
The diaphragm; (also) the greater omentum. Also (occasionally) in plural: the front of a person's body between the ribcage and the waist. Cf. midriff n. 1.
