单词 midwifery
释义

midwiferyn.

Brit. /ˌmɪdˈwɪf(ə)ri/, /ˈmɪdwɪf(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˈˌmɪdˈˌwaɪf(ə)ri/
Forms: late Middle English medewifry, 1500s midwifrey, 1500s–1600s midwifrie, 1500s–1700s midwifry, 1500s– midwifery, 1600s 1900s– midwivery, 1900s– mid-wiffery; Scottish pre-1700 meedwiferie, pre-1700 midwyfrie, 1700s– midwifery.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: midwife n., -ery suffix.
Etymology: < midwife n. + -ery suffix. Compare earlier midwifing n. N.E.D. (1906) also gives the pronunciation (mi·difri) /ˈmɪdɪfrɪ/, but this appears to have been an obsolescent variant: compare the note s.v. midwife n. The tendency in British English to shift the stress to the second syllable is first recorded in the later twentieth century, and appears to reflect the influence of other polysyllabic formations in -ery suffix.
