Etymology: < German Miemit (M. H. Klaproth 1802, in Beiträge zur chemischen Kenntnis der Mineral-Körper III. 292) < Miemo , the name of a village in Tuscany, west-central Italy, where the mineral was discovered + -it -ite suffix¹. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (məi·eməit) /ˈmaɪɛmaɪt/.
