单词 mindic
释义

mindicadj.

Brit. /ˈmɪndɪk/, U.S. /ˈmɪndɪk/, Australian English /ˈmɪndɪk/
Forms: 1800s mendyt, 1900s– mindic, 1900s– minditch.
Origin: A borrowing from Nyungar. Etymons: Nyungar minditj, mindatj.
Etymology: < Nyungar (Perth–Albany region) minditj or mindatj. The Nyungar forms given above are reconstructed (compare A. Dench in N. Thieberger & W. McGregor Macquarie Aboriginal Words, 1994); the word was first recorded in form mendeit (1831 in Jrnl. Royal Geogr. Soc. 1); in later Nyungar word lists it appears as mindat (1833), men-dyke (1840), mendyk (1845), mendiggi (1851), then variously as mindyt, mindytch, mindick, etc., reflecting the orthographical conventions of those who recorded it. Its status, even in Aboriginal English, is questionable (it is followed by a translation in most available quots.); it should perhaps rather be regarded as early Australian pidgin.
Australian.
Esp. in Australian Aboriginal usage: ill, sick.
