Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: Yiddish misnaged, Hebrew miṯnaggēḏ, hiṯnaggēḏ.
Etymology: < Yiddish misnaged and modern Hebrew miṯnaggēḏ, lit. ‘opponent, adversary’, use as noun of post-biblical Hebrew miṯnaggēḏ opposed, present participle of hiṯnaggēḏ to be against < nagaḏ to oppose.The forms with -t- represent normalization of the word to standard Hebrew orthography; some speakers who write these forms nevertheless pronounce them with medial /s/.
