Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French oued.
Etymology: < French oued (1849; earlier in the names of particular rivers: see note) < Arabic wād wadi n. Compare French ouadi (1807 or earlier).Found earlier in the names of particular rivers in those territories in North Africa which were formerly under French control, e.g.:1839 Jrnl. Statist. Soc. 2 117 The only considerable rivers in the reserved territory are the Rio Salado (Oued-el-Malah) and the Habrah.1874 Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. 30 117 Lignite occurs..at El Kheicha on the banks of the Oued M'Zi, a branch of the L'Aghouat river.1883 Encycl. Brit. XV. 608/1 Mascara, a fortified town of Algeria..occupies two small hills separated by the Oued Toudman.
