Etymology: < post-classical Latin microphthalmos (1713 (in B. Castelli Lexicon Medicum) or earlier) < ancient Greek μικρόϕθαλμος small-eyed < μικρο- micro- comb. form + ancient Greek ὀϕθαλμός eye (see ophthalmo- comb. form). Compare earlier microphthalmy n., and buphthalmos n., lagophthalmus n.

Abnormally small size of one or both eyes, usually as a congenital condition.
