Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French microsphaera.
Etymology: < French microsphaera (in sense 1, L. H. Léveillé 1851, in Ann. des Sci. Nat.: Bot. 15 381; in sense 2, E. Metchnikoff Leçons sur la pathol. comparée de l'inflammation (1892) ii. 21) < micro- micro- comb. form + classical Latin sphaera (see sphere n.).
1. A genus of plant-parasitic fungi (family Erysiphaceae) that includes the causative agents of European gooseberry mildew, oak mildew, and various other powdery mildews.
