Etymology: < mis- prefix1 + deal v. In sense 1 after Middle Dutch misdelen, misdeelen (1479 in the passage translated in quot. 1481 at sense 1). Quot. 1746 at sense 3a perhaps shows the same verb, but apprehended by Hoyle as showing a construction with miss v.1
