Etymology: < classical Latin ministrātor servant, attendant, in post-classical Latin also person who administers justice (4th cent.), ecclesiastical official (early 9th cent. in a British source), person who administers the sacrament (late 14th cent. in a British source) < ministrāt- , past participial stem of ministrāre minister v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French ministrateur (15th cent.), Old Occitan ministrador (14th cent.), Portuguese †ministrador (1479), Spanish †ministrador (1260). Compare ministrer n.
