单词 minoan
释义

Minoanadj.n.

Brit. /mᵻˈnəʊən/, /mʌɪˈnəʊən/, U.S. /məˈnoʊn/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Mīnōs , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Mīnōs Minos (ancient Greek Μίνως), the name of a legendary king of Crete + -an suffix. Compare classical Latin Mīnōus, adjective, ancient Greek Μινῷος, adjective.
A. adj.
Of, relating to, characteristic of, or designating the Bronze Age civilization of Crete and neighbouring parts of the Aegean. The Bronze Age civilization centred on Crete is generally thought to have lasted from c3000 b.c. to around 1100 b.c. Impressive remains reveal the existence of large urban centres dominated by palaces decorated with elaborate frescoes. The precise chronology of the successive phases and ultimate collapse of this civilization remains controversial; it was formerly thought to have been destroyed by a huge volcanic eruption on the island of Thera (Santorini) around 1500 _b.c., but later evidence suggests that the civilization continued to flourish for some time after this disaster.
