Etymology: < classical Latin mītificāre to make milder or less severe (in post-classical Latin to alleviate (a disease), 5th cent.) < mītis mild (see mitigate v.) + -ficāre -fy suffix. Compare French †mitifier to soften (1611 in Cotgrave), Middle French mitifié , participial adjective (2nd half of the 16th cent.). Compare earlier mitification n.
Obsolete. rare.
