单词 beja
释义

Bejan.

/ˈbɛdʒə/
Forms: 1800s Bedja, 1800s– Beja.
Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic Bijā.
Etymology: < Arabic Bijā, denoting this people, original sense and further etymology unknown. Compare French Bedja (1811 or earlier). The Beja self-designation is Bidhaawyeet (indefinite form; definite Tubdhaawi ), itself apparently < the Arabic name. Arabic Bijā , denoting this people, is sometimes said to derive ultimately < Arabic badawī Bedouin n., but the association of the Beja self-designation with the Arabic word for ‘Bedouin’ is more likely to reflect a folk etymology which arose among neighbouring Sudanese Arabs.
A nomadic people of Hamitic extraction living between the Nile and the Red Sea; the Cushitic language of this people. Also attributive.
