Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French mesfaisance ; mis- prefix1, feasance n.
Etymology: Either < Anglo-Norman and Middle French mesfaisance (1456) < mes mis- prefix2 + faisance feasance n., or independently < mis- prefix1 + feasance n. Compare earlier misfease v., and also nonfeasance n. and later malfeasance n.
1. Law. A transgression, trespass; spec. the wrongful exercise of lawful authority or the improper performance of a lawful act.
