Etymology: < French molinisme (1651 in a work title) < the name of Luis de Molina (1535–1600), Spanish Jesuit theologian + -isme -ism suffix. Compare post-classical Latin Molinismus (1650 in a work title), Spanish molinismo (1884 or earlier in this sense). Compare earlier Molinist n.1
Theology.
The doctrine, propounded in 1588 by Luis de Molina, which linked the efficacy of divine grace with the free cooperation of humankind, free will in turn being safeguarded by divine grace.
