Earlier use is also implied by post-classical Latin mollonda:1279 in W. Illingworth Rotuli Hundredorum (1818) II. 425 Custumare tenente Mollond'.

Land for which rent was paid in commutation of feudal service.In later use sometimes spec. upland (as opposed to fenland). The reason for this is unclear; it perhaps follows the use in quot. 1607, which N.E.D. (1907) states is ‘erroneous’.
