单词 monoplane
释义

monoplanen.adj.

Brit. /ˈmɒnəpleɪn/, U.S. /ˈmɑnəˌpleɪn/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mono- comb. form, plane n.3
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + plane n.3, after biplane n. Compare French monoplan (1908, or perhaps earlier; the first monoplane was built by Robert Esnault-Pelterie in France in 1907: compare quot. 1907 at sense B. reporting this event). Compare earlier aeroplane n., multiplane adj. and n., and also plane n.5, triplane n. at tri- comb. form 2b.
Aeronautics.
A. n.
An aeroplane having only one wing on either side of the fuselage or (originally) a single wing extending across the fuselage; esp. a small or light aircraft of this kind. Also: the wing of such an aeroplane (rare). The wings of the first aeroplanes were single structures stretching from one side of the fuselage to the other, and a monoplane had one such structure; when in later designs the wings were separated by the fuselage the terminology of monoplane, biplane, and triplane continued, although the aircraft concerned had two, four, and six wings respectively, rather than one, two, and three.
