Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: German Monopodie ; monopodium n., -y suffix3.
Etymology: In sense 1 < German Monopodie (1834 in the passage translated in quot. 1844 at sense 1) < post-classical Latin monopodia (4th cent.) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek μονοποδία < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + -ία -ia suffix1. In sense 2 < monopod- (in monopodium n.) + -y suffix3. Compare dipody n., tripody n., tetrapody n., pentapody n., hexapody n. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (mǫ̆nǫ·pŏdi) /məˈnɒpədɪ/.
