Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper names Morgan, Keenan.
Etymology: < the initial letters of the surnames of William W. Morgan (1906–94) and Philip C. Keenan (1908–2000), American astronomers, who developed the classification on the basis of an earlier classification, MKK , developed by Morgan, Keenan, and E. Kellman: see further Atlas Stellar Spectra (1943); see also quot. 1986.
Astronomy.
attributive. Designating or relating to a system of spectral classification in which stars of a given spectral type are further classified into one of several (originally six) classes of luminosity. Esp. in MK classification, MK system.The luminosity classes are represented by roman numerals in the following sequence: Ia–bright supergiants, Ib–supergiants, II–bright giants, III–giants, IV–subgiants, V–main sequence dwarfs, VI–subdwarfs, (VII–white dwarfs).
