Forms: 1800s mobud, 1900s– mobed. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian mūbid.
Etymology: < Persian mūbid (also as maubad , mūbad ), in Middle Persian attested as magwpt , continuing an unattested Old Persian compound with the literal sense ‘master of the magi’ < maguš (see magus n.) + pati- lord, master (cognate with Sanskrit pati in the same sense).
A Zoroastrian priest; esp. one who is a Parsee. Also used as a title.
