Etymology: < ancient Greek Μολοσσία, the name of a district in the centre of Epirus, a region of ancient Greece now forming part of north-western Greece and southern Albania ( < Μολοσσός (see molossus n.) + -ία -ia suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare -ian suffix. Compare molossus n.Reference is made to the Molossians in the Old English translation of Orosius Hist., but only in unassimilated forms after the Latin genitive plural: Molosorum, Molossorum, Malosorum, Malossorum.
