单词 monograph
释义

monographn.

Brit. /ˈmɒnəɡrɑːf/, /ˈmɒnəɡraf/, U.S. /ˈmɑnəˌɡræf/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -graph comb. form, as remodelling of monography n. (probably on the grounds that that word suggested an abstract rather than a concrete noun; compare -graphy comb. form, -y suffix3). Compare French monographe (1819 as adjective designating an author or book dealing with a single subject, 1824 as noun in sense ‘author or book treating a single topic’). Compare earlier monographer n., slightly earlier monographical adj., and also polygraph n.
1.
a. Originally, in Botany and Zoology: a separate treatise on a single species, genus, or larger group of plants or animals. Later more widely: a detailed written study of a single specialized topic (distinguished from general studies in which the topic is dealt with as part of a wider subject). Cf. earlier monography n. 1.In early use chiefly with of; later with on.
