单词 monoxylon
释义

monoxylonn.

Brit. /məˈnɒksɪlən/, /məˈnɒksɪlɒn/, U.S. /məˈnɑkˈsɪl(ə)n/, /məˈnɑksɪˌlɑn/
Inflections: Plural monoxyla.
Forms: 1500s monoxyla (plural), 1600s–1800s monoxylo, 1800s– monoxylon.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μονόξυλον.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μονόξυλον, use as noun (short for πλοῖον μονόξυλον boat made from a solid trunk) of neuter of μονόξυλος (see monoxylous adj.). In quot. 1555 at sense 1 translating post-classical Latin monoxyla , neuter plural (1533); compare post-classical Latin monoxylus (late 4th cent.), use as noun of masculine of monoxylus (see monoxylous adj.). In form monoxylo after modern Greek μονόξυλο.The ships in quot. 1995 at sense 1 are probably plank-boats on a single-log base, which are named in Byzantine Greek μονόξυλα (10th cent.) in Constantine Porphyrogennetos De Administrando Imperio. It is likely that sense 2 involves a misunderstanding, since the Greek etymon does not support Smyth's definition.
