Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps partly modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: quay n., -age suffix.
Etymology: < quay n. + -age suffix; in sense 1 after either Anglo-Norman kayage, kaʒage, keyage, Anglo-Norman and Middle French cayage, Middle French kaiage, caiage, caage, quaiage (1295 in Old French as queage) or post-classical Latin caiagium, cayagium, kayagium (from 12th cent. in British (frequently) and continental sources).Earlier examples such as the following, showing a vernacular word in a Latin context, may show either the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word:1387–8 in J. C. Tingey Rec. City of Norwich (1910) II. 49 [For] kaiage [at Yarmouth for timber, 40 d.].
