单词 moesian
释义

Moesiann.adj.

Brit. /ˈmiːsɪən/, /ˈmiːzɪən/, U.S. /ˈmiʃiən/, /miˈʃiən/
Forms:

α. 1500s Misien, 1500s Mysian.

β. 1700s–1800s Maesian, 1800s– Moesian.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Moesī , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Moesī (Hellenistic Greek Μοισοί), the name of the people of Moesia ( > Moesia, the name of the region) + -an suffix. The 16th-cent. forms Misien , Mysian probably reflect classical Latin Mȳsus (adjective) Moesian (isolated example in Ovid) or Hellenistic Greek Μυσοί (plural noun). Strabo reports a transplantation (c a.d. 4) of Mysians (see Mysian n. and adj.) from their homeland in Asia Minor to the part of Europe subsequently called Moesia. These people came to be known as Μοισοί rather than Μυσοί. The use in Ovid reflects this story of the origins of the Moesians.
