单词 monarda
释义

monardan.

Brit. /məˈnɑːdə/, /məʊˈnɑːdə/, U.S. /məˈnɑrdə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Monarda.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Monarda, genus name ( Linnaeus Hortus Cliffortianus (1738) 11) < the name of Nicolas Monardes (1493–1588), Spanish physician and botanist, one of the earliest writers on American plants + -a -a suffix1 1. Compare French monarde (1775). N.E.D. (1907) included the following as its earliest quotation; however, Monardus here is probably better interpreted as a reference to Nicolas Monardes, either in Latinized form or misprinted:1712 J. Browne tr. P. Pomet et al. Compl. Hist. Druggs I. 179 This was doubtless the gum Monardus us'd against the gout. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (monā·ɹdă) /məʊˈnɑːdə/.
Any of various aromatic North American plants constituting the genus Monarda (family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae)), allied to Salvia, esp. one of those grown for ornament; spec. (more fully scarlet monarda) the plant M. didyma, also called Oswego tea, bee-balm, or bergamot, which has showy red flowers. Also (in form Monarda): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 22.
